The Gap Analysis between Demand and Supply for Container Handling Services in Egyptian Ports 2030 by Using ARIMA Models

By 2030, the Ministry of Transport in Egypt aimed to increase the capacity of seaports in containers handling to 40 million TEUs compared to the current capacity of 12 million TEUs in 2024, in addition to increasing the berths length, increasing the number of industrial and logistical areas, and expanding the port hinterland. Therefore, the study aims to identify and analyze the gap between the planned capacity and the estimated throughput of Egyptian ports in 2030. This is achieved by comparing the future production capacity of container handling in Egyptian ports with the estimated demand for container handling services, and conducting gap analysis at two levels. The first is the analysis of the gap at the planned and current capacity levels, which showed that the current capacity in 2024 for container handling in Egyptian ports is 12.4 million TEUs and the actual volume of demand for container handling in Egyptian ports is 8.4 million TEUs. That refers to there is a surplus supply in container handling services in Egyptian ports of 4 million TEUs to the utilization rate approaching 70%, which required the development and modernization of Egyptian ports so that the ports are ready to keep up with the demand for their services in the future and to avoid congestion in ports and the loss of their competitive advantage and the flight of ships from frequentation.
